Appreciating physics in everyday life

We’re recalling an old project. In 2006-07, Millennium India Education Foundation organized an inter-school science competition “Symposium on Science” with the support of NCSTC Network (an association of NGOs working in science communication). The event was promoted by Department of Science & Technology, Government of India.  Students of primary, middle and senior classes of schools of East Delhi and Noida participated in the event. The idea mainly was about how to ‘popularize science’ and more specifically about ‘physics in everyday life’.

This idea of showing children science as they experience it in everyday life is about making them enjoy the experience of learning science and making their thought process more scientific. Since it’s pretty much something we’d like to share and talk about with young children today as well, we thought of listing a few ideas that you could use (as examples with details) with young children as well!

Seeing Physics in Daily Life

1. Automobiles: From a bicycle to cars and buses, all these work on the mechanical principles of physics.

2. Television: A TV uses electromagnets to direct electrons to a screen thus producing pictures.

3. Mobile phones: Cellphones uses microwaves, another important facet of physics.

4. Gadgets and appliances: Everything from a simple wrist watch or a small bulb to the most sophisticated gadgets of today work on the principles of physics.

5. Gravity: How else would you be standing on this earth?

The next time you see young children struggling with a scientific theory, don’t forget to give them some real life examples that make their learning nicer!
