Since MIEF only just started posting online, we thought it would be a good idea to share with our readers what projects we have been doing recently.
In partnership with the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, Millennium India Education Foundation connected with young people in Delhi and conducted a survey in April 2013. This was followed by a one day conference and discussion on harnessing the ‘Youth Power in developing sustainable ideas for climate change’.
The survey presented us with interesting findings:
- ~80% young people were aware of the climate change phenomena
- Over 70% recounted things like – change in rainfall, daily temperature
- 67% claimed that increased consumerism was the main cause
When asked about the big hindrances, many key issues came up, see these:
Interestingly when we talked about solutions, we had quite a few recommendations from young people, these included:
- Involve the young people in the change process as they are able to adapt to change better
- Young people can help develop new methods and equipment for mitigating effects
- Young people should be able to take action and be involved in ‘decision making’
- ‘Awakening’ people through Facebook & Twitter
They even quoted a few things that can bring about change. 67% said women can help tackle climate change! Which ones do you agree with?
The sample size was 300 people. Let us know if you want more details for us to pass on!
