Nicknamed ‘Magnificent Mary’ for her excellent skills and achievements, Mary Kom is a five-time world boxing champion. She is also the only woman to have won a medal in each one of the six world championships.
Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom was born on March 1, 1983 in Churachanpur district of Manipur. Though she had interest in sports from childhood, the success of Dingko Singh inspired her to become a boxer in 2000. She has been ranked as No. 4 AIBA World Women’s Ranking Flyweight category. That is quite an achievement, especially for a girl born in a country like India, where gender discrimination is one of the worst in the World. She was recently awarded Padma Bhushan. Mary Kom has, now, started India’s first female fight club at Imphal to teach thousands of girls to defend themselves against sexual violence.
We can try to imagine what all problems she must have faced during her journey to the top. All it takes is hard-work and strong will. Inspire yourselves and have a great week ahead!
